Earth Hour, 27 Mar, 8.30pm

Hi folks,

It's been a year since the last hype and happening Green Nite event called Earth Hour was launched in Malaysia.

I think thus far, it has created a wave of awareness and subsequent green activities and campaign in our country.

I feel despite the hypes and some remarks that it is just an "event", there's no harm at all trying to do something for a good cause and the common heart to do something to make a difference to our Earth. Just bear in mind that we do not create more "rubbish" or other wastages while supporting/engaging in this event! It supposed to be something  Good for this Earth, so besides shutting down the lights, we should also maintain other green habits which we have been doing like:
  • Campaign organizers/sponsors can give goodies bag in "reusable bag" form and not in paperbag
  • Less plastic bags/packaging in whatever products produce to commemorate Earth Hour
  • Perhaps using LED or energy-saving advertising gadgets/tools/board
Of course, better if we can continue this conscious effort in our daily life to live green and be green rite ;) after Earth Hour as well!

Last year, my family had an early celebration for my brother-in-law's whose birthday falls on Apr 1. This year, the children playgroup that my kids are participating organised talks about Green Earth and switch off the light to give the children a feel of the need to conserve electricity to play their part for our Earth. How about you? How did you spent your Earth Hour.No matter what, hope you have fun and have a good time!

Let's support the campaign and maintain a healthy lifestyle and habits for a better Earth for our future generation!

Apply online for Year One (for Selangor only)

Hi folks,

Have you read the news about Online application for Year One students for Selangor starting from this year onward?
You can find the link here:

Excerpts from TheStarOnline today

Apply online for Year One

By KAREN CHAPMAN and OH ING YEEN

Registration open from March 1 till April 30, says Selangor official

educate@thestar.com.my

PETALING JAYA: Parents in Selan-gor who want to register their children for Year One must do so online from this year.

They have to register their children between March 1 and April 30 and log onto apps.emoe.gov.my/esppsel/pptahun1/ to do so.

A Selangor Education Department official said applications for Year One entry could be done from any computer with Internet access.

"Parents who do not have Internet access can go to the school they want to enrol their children in and ask the teachers there to help them key in the information," said the official yesterday.

This, he added, was the first time the department was registering Year One pupils online.

"The online system will enable the registration process to be more efficient.

"Previously parents had to queue at the school they wanted to register their children in," he said.

Once the children were registered, he said the district education office could place them in schools.

For full article, refer to the online article here.

Now I wonder at what age can we start applying for our kids? Previously the manual one is starting from age 5 onwards I think...how about online version I wonder?

What say you? Anyone tried applying before?

Hope you can share more about it!

Thanks and  Cheers!

Tagged

Hi folks,

This entry is written (voluntary tagged with a blogger friend's entry here)..haha…saje nak jot down and reflect against some interesting moments in life..haha…
1.       Where and when did you first meet your hubby?

At a youth camp when I was 16. He was my youth group facilitator/leader. Nope, we did not get started then….only after I started working 7 years later did we start :)

2. Love at first sight?

Not exactly as coming from an All-Girls' school, I am tad bit shy with guys to be honest.

3. Who is he when the first time you met him?

He is a passionate and young youth group facilitator at a summer camp I attended.

4. How long did he take to ask you out?

Hmm, 7 years later when I am 23?

5. First place dating?

If I can recall, we often meet with a bunch of friends to discuss about youth camp preparation (later on when i joined them as facilitators). Hardly call a date then since it is full of more than 10 other people.
A proper first place of dating would be at movie cinema(to call it a proper date, since DH is a cinema and movie fan!

6. How did he proposed?

No formal proposal but we just sort of decided that "it's time". That is why my friends(cum bride maids/ladies in honor) made him kneel down to "sort of" properly proposed to me on our wedding day.

7. Special dates with your hubby?

I think we both love "servicing/entertaining/travelling", DH love entertaining guest and I used to be the "interpreter"(English translation) amongst my group. Thus, those trips bringing overseas friends around Singapore, Cameron, food hunting around Klang Valley are some good happy memories for us!
So are those trips we made while scouting places for organising youth camps and those late night supper we used to had as DH often works quite late that we got no time to date during the week days. So very often it's a late night snack at his favourite mamak stall(vegetarian one of course!)

8. Changes that he asked you to do?

i. More "taste-ty" dishes as my cooking can be quite "blanch/tasteless" to him who are used to "outside" food whereas I prefer organic and "plain/natural taste" food with less seasonings especially when I cook for the kids as well.
(In progress and in experiment using more natural seasonings like herbs etc)
ii. Improve my verbal and written communication skills in transmitting messages/communication as DH felt at times, my messages was not "complete" and often leaves people "wondering" or get wrong impression or wrong assumption :P
Especially when to be honest, being an English-ed, when I convey in Chinese, my brain often translate the term from Eng-Chinese, thus at times, the words are not used in proper way as it should be...or slow in reaction..this I am slowly improving..it's been working that way for years...I wonder is that how it work for others? I.e. message gotta be translated from the Stronger language to the Spoken ones as required by the listener.
(Note: Sorry guys if I also made you feel the same while reading my blog entries...all I can say...I am improving it...slowly being a natural daydreamer I am.. :P this part takes a little bit more effort!)
iii. Leave my hair grow long as DH said it suits my face better
(DONE..after 4 years of refusal when busy with young babies and my own preference for easy-to-manage short hair)...finally I am now with longer than shoulder-length hair.

 9. What's about him that you love so much?

His generosity and big-hearted and his openness and global-mindedness to accept and embrace new and effective ideas!
In short, not "kolot" or narrow-minded(guys out there, these are some vital plus points that all women looking for I believe....correct ladies! :D)

 10. What's abt him you wish he would change?

i. Take care of his health more by adopting healthier(less seasoning) diet as well as take time to exercise and rest.
ii. Have patience to listen to others while still maintaining his usual confidence and "leadership" way.
This can be rather contradicting, even though I hated it when DH simply shoo my ideas/message off. But most of the time, his decision/ideas are often the more practical and right way :P but we women loves to be heard and respected, aren't we :P

11. You will lose your mind and crack your head when he....

 Got angry/impatient.
It can be scary! Vocano eruption!

12. You will smile through your eyes for the whole day when he.....

Send any lovey-dovey sms or buy me a surprise gift for birthday, Valentine's day or remembering our important dates.
Why? As he hardly recall those dates(without me the wife cum secretary reminds him in a direct or indirect(add in his iphone calendar with alert beep) and he is not a romantic type would be "touchy" or "lovey" to send lovey sms or the "softie" who would say sorry first or at least saying sorry to make the wife feels better(no matter who is at wrong) being the macho guy he is...
So when he does these..it makes me smile and "touch"..see..so easy to "tam"/win your wife back!

 13. Complete the sentence below.

My love towards my hubby is as big as the love I have for my kids and my life. They are my priorities as always...at every small and big decision I make in life ever since they stepped into my life.

-The END for now...let's see what other extension we can have from this tag-

If anyone of you out there who are interested to share and do this tag(on voluntary basis), please do leave your comment here and if possible to link back to the original blog whom you find inspiration to do so...so as to let the reader has a better idea and linkages ;)

Thanks for reading and I enjoy sharing this too..thanks to temphouse_wife who share this tag!

Why you should not cook when you are not feeling well

Hi folks!

Last week, after recovering from Gingivitis, I was trying to prepare breakfast and lunch (packed lunch from home for DH and me), but the lunch and breakfast turned out "yucky". The lunch meal was too salty and the breakfast is tasteless…why? Because I think my taste buds and brain are still being "drugged", thus I am not able to make proper decision on how much salt I need to add….DISASTROUS meals…huhu

So next time when I am recovering from any sickness, better stick to cuppa noodles or outside takeaway meals..for safety measures.

Plus, if you are recovering from any diarrhea or vomiting spells, I feel it is even more important not to cook but to stick to take- away or if you are lucky get someone else to take over the "chef" task for the day. This is to avoid spreading the germs to your family…

Hope I stay well and sober throughout the days in 2010!

Cheers!

Never drive when you are "drugged"

Hi folks,

I am getting better today, my gum is not so painful now (keep finger crossed...hope it remains painless throughout the day and nite). Somehow the pain is more intense during the nite which I am not sure why...

Last night, I was trying to bear the pain until Shone take his last milk session(breastfeeding) at 10pm before I finally take the painkillers (3 types..yea..so very much "drugged" by it) as the medication will flow into the bloodstream and thus the milk..so doc advice me to feed him before taking the medication and have a gap of 6 hours after taking the medicine before feeding him again. Finally DH can't bear to see me in pain, then he took over to make Shone sleep (without mommy around) so that I can take the medicine earlier to stop the pain.

Now, I took the medication around 10.30pm last nite, up till now, the next morning, I am still feeling a bit in "daze" and I felt that my response aren't as fast as normal days...phew, don't even dare to overtake a slow-moving truck in front of me...going barely 50km/j...

Now, I kept reminding myself to take it slow and easy, especially when I recalled the mishap faced by my friend who had a car accident with her son in her car simply because she took the flu medication and was feeling drowsy. Damn scary!! Even though she and her son survived the accident, but his 5 years old son had over 20 stiches on his head while she hurt her leg so badly that she cannot drive or walk properly for months. I think she broke her bones...if I am not wrong, she is in clutches when I see her again.

So folks, better take precaution! Always ask the doctor whether the medication will make you feeling drugged/drowsy. If yes, make sure someone else drive you to whichever destination you need to go. Never drive when you are "drugged".

Have a safe trip and healthy lifestyle always...

Cheers!

Hosting a Vegetarian Guest

Hi folks,

Now, I believe every one of us would like to be a good host. It doesn't matter if we like to play host in the first place. Haha…like it or not…(some people love playing host!!), we do play host from time to time in some part of our life, whether is during our wedding, our kids' birthday, etc, etc.

Now, being a vegetarian, I have experienced some very considerate and thoughtful host which makes my visit memorable and of course makes a very good impression on the host as well.

Important points to take note of:

1.       Ask before hand or provide an option.

Some organizers are so considerate and global thinker that they include "vegetarian" option in their meal/special diet checklist in their registration form.

2.       Aware there are different types of vegetarian. Here are some main ones:

Lacto vegetarian - Individuals in this group abstain from all animal products except for dairy products in their diet. Means they do take cheese ( without "animal rennet", i.e. stomach of a young goat/cow)

Lacto-ovo vegetarians - This type of vegetarian diet excludes all meat except for dairy and eggs. Not too different from the previous type except this group do take eggs and the earlier don't.

Vegans - These are the 'hard-core" vegetarians who avoid all animal products in their diet, such as meats, dairy products, and eggs. The vegan diet relies on lentils, beans, soy products etc.

3.       Important points to take note:

a.       Fish and white meat is NOT considered vegetarian for most Asians.

b.      Some vegetarian abstained from garlic, leek, and onion for both religious and health beliefs.

c.       Serve your guest using clean utensils and cooking utensils if possible

The cooking utensils can be nicely-scrubbed and cleaned before using. And for some of my friends, out of respect and logical sense, they would cook the vegetarian dishes before cooking the meat dishes). And some even have special cutleries put away for serving only vegetarian meal as it is common for some Chinese to observe vegetarian during the 1st and 15th of every month in the lunar calendar ;)

Now, I hope it does not sounded too difficult to host a vegetarian guest, in fact, if you master this special skillset (ahem), you would have no problem hosting Muslims friends as well.

In my coming blog entries, I shall share some of the easy- to-make vegetarian party-worthy recipes. Stay tuned…or if you got yours to share, please do! Deeply appreciate it!

Btw, I like to start a simple tag here if there are bloggers who are interested to share…how about sharing Tips to host a Muslim/Vegan/Diabetic/Disabled guest….it'll be such a great learning and sharing articles with everyone! If you do post up, pls. do link amongst us so that readers get to learn to be a good host from all different perspective!

And please, do drop a comment here if you do posted the related articles as I would be your first reader who are interested to read and add on your comment box ;) hehe..

Cheers and thanks folks!

Who forms your eating habits?

Hi folks,

Before I start blah-ing, have you taken your meals/snack? What did you have? Do you enjoy it? Is this what you normally eat daily?

I would think most of us, our eating habits generally influenced a lot by our parents, and then later on as we grew older, we learnt how to make our own food choices.

For me, I think the 3 guys in my life forms different parts of my eating habits in my 30 years of life.

First is my dad who used to preach that no matter how thrifty we are, never save and pinch on food. We must always eat well. True and behold, my dad made sure we have hearty would take the trouble to pack hot and yummy lunch and bring it over to school for us during our break. And every morning, before sending us to school, he would bring us to take hearty breakfast. These were the yummy eating memories I had with my dad.

Then after started dating and then married to my DH, who is a food hunter and food lover, my eating habits also started to grow from there onwards. Being a vegetarian, both of us loves hunting down/visiting new vegetarian outlets or newly discovered ones. He won't mind driving one hour just to taste the food. More often than not, friends (me included) often calls him to check out what vegetarian eating places available at certain location. So he is like a vegetarian outlet directories to many of his friends. I learnt to get pampered once in awhile not cooking at home but to hunt down vegetarian eateries. I also learnt to put more effort to make the food taste and look great when I cook as presentation and taste is so important to my DH.

Then come along my food-loving son. He is like his dad, loves eating to bits. Bring him to a wedding dinner function, you won't have much trouble with him if you can just find the right food for him to munch. He is also one who makes me eat healthier as since I am still breastfeeding him, I have to avoid some taboo food like coconut milk(or in Malay, we call it "santan") and thus curry, chilli, etc to avoid getting windy tummy. So yes, I have not feast on curry rich in coconut milk for sometime now, though I do occasionally have some which is cook with milk or simply no santan at all…

Now, how about you? Who forms your eating habits? No matter what, I think everyone of us do have a choice to choose over our eating habits. So have you started adopting a healthier eating habit as part of your New Year resolution? It's never too late to start!

Let's do it now! For me, I hope to reduce processed food and take more fruits and salad daily!

Cheers!

BEWARE: Do you Return Call to your Miss Call?

Now, folks, do you ALWAYS call back the miss call no. you received even those which you do not know who it is?

Normally, I will not do so...unless the same no. miss call a few times...but then again, I would check and ask my intuition whether I should call back.

One day I receive a call from a number whom I do not know. Two miss call...and weird, it did not show up in my recent miss call list but appeared in my Maxis miss call notification instead. Not sure if it's an error on my phone network or hardware.

I did what I happened to do the other occasion, I googled the no :P yea..the last time I did, I found out it was from XXX bank.
So, I did it again...googled it and found this article from The Star Citizen blog. Really scares me man...so guys, better stay smart and alert on such cases happening around.....

Cheers and Be Safe!

Beware of latest scam by phone!
Posted by: redtiger

Please beware of the latest scam by phone. A woman claiming to be from Bonuslink calls you and tells you about an insurance scheme that will insure all your belongings including hospitalization for a maximum amount of RM10,000.00 [A very convincing figure! If she said RM1 million, eyes will pop out and the brains will generate suspicions]

The number she use to call potential victims is 03-20366555. Last week this number rang but I did not answer as I was overseas. I did not want to pay for the roaming fees for a number not familiar to me.

On Monday 1 Feb 2010 I tried to call this number and it was revealed that the number does not exist!

This afternoon the same number rang and I answered. She gave her name as Haslinda from Bonuslink. After her long and winding explainations, she asked me for my credit card details to do auto-debit for the insurance [Autodebit? She can use the credit card number to clone another card and make purchases faster than you can read this blog! ] I played along with her without her realizing I was trying to corner her. I asked her why the phone number does not exist when I tried to call on Monday. She said that is her call center number and the number is always busy and no one to answer [huh!]

Then she said she is actually from Hong Leong/Bonuslink. I asked which one and she repeatedly said Hong Leong/Bonuslink and telling me its the same, as if she was talking to a fool! I insisted its either Hong Leong or Bonuslink and she said Bonuslink.

I told her I will call her again. Before I could do that she called me again and gave me another number to call. I waited for 30 minutes to call because I do not want her to wait at that phone. I called and a chinese woman answered and greeted as UTS Agency. I hang up the phone.

I do not know what UTS stands [maybe its UNTUK TIPU SEMUA] for but for sure this is a new scam to get unsuspecting people to give their credit card details through the phone to a fraudster.

Malaysians are genius in conning people. They have nothing else to do but think about how to con people. Those working for these syndicates are also guilty.

I have already emailed Bonuslink to inform them of this matter and awaiting their reply.

So please advise all your relatives and friends especially those gullible ones to be extra careful when answering calls from numbers that not familiar to them.

Just my 2 cents worth for th Chinese New Year!

Man armed with hammer assaults pre-school children in class

Hi folks,

Have you read or heard the news...about a guy who used hammer and hurt children and caretakers in kindergarten?

I heard over the news last night and am extremely disturbed and horrified by the news.

To read more about the news, check out TheStar Online here.

Hope this unsound man would be arrested soon!

Have you started planning for school holidays activities?

Hi folks!
Have you started planning for school holidays activities?

I have been looking around and started thinking about it. Ever since KY started schooling, suddenly I am like other parents bloggers and non-bloggers alike, trying to plan ahead and think for school break activites…wow…time flies and as kids grows up, so do we as parents….interesting!

Lately KY seems to like colouring a lot, During my last trip to Johor, I bought her some colouring books to keep her occupied during the journey. Yeah, I should really start looking into self-printed DIY colouring book 'cos wow, it is not CHEAP to get a colouring book nowadays.  A few pages cost me MYR 5.99!! I can get those printed merely MYR0.40 cents for paper cost! Talking about having the time and money…I think I just need to be more organized and plan ahead in order to save cost!

Did I mentioned that I am planning to get my kids a piano or keyboard? So I have to really plan my expenses well so that at least by year end I can get one for them?

Anyone of you have any idea as on what age I can start exposing them for piano lessons? I heard some started as young as 3. KY would be turning 4 this July, so I think it is the right time.

How much would a piano(suitable for their age and preferably as they grow up too) cost these days?

Is second-hand one a possible option?

What type of keyboard should I be getting?

Lotsa questions in my mind now…if you all have any good suggestions or great places to source out these items, pls. do enlighten me! Thank you all in ADVANCE!

Coming back to school holiday activities, I have yet to have much clue, another reason being, hey we working parents got no public holidays at all for Mar and Apr..notice that? So well…any activities that requires our participation from us would be out of question.

So just got to stick to some normal and not too boring stuff…perhaps..colouring again? :P

Thinking …thinking..still thinking….how about you? Got it all planned out? PLs. share with me!!! Help!!! :D

Cheers!

Shone at 20 months

Time really flies, soon Shone will be turning two.

My goal to BF Shone till 2 years old nearly cut short due to recent flu attack and my own careless mistakes of not alerting the doctor that I am still breastfeeding. The flu medication I took was so strong that I can really feel my milk supply disappear just like that…just mere single pill I took. So sad…

I can sense that there's not much milk left but Shone is still sucking hard. Hopefully his diligence can sustain my milk supply while I try to get as much rest and nutrients I can to boost the supply back once more!

Shone at this age is so fun to watch! Ask any parents of a 20 month toddler!

He loves to entertain us and amuse himself.

-          Talks a lot

-          Sings a lot, his fav are Twinkle-twinkle little star, Incy Wincy Spider, and many other songs we used to sing or play on the Iphone application.

-          Like to perform and make funny expression

-          Loves feeding himself

-          Loves walking more than being carried (opposite to his currently 3 year plus sister who wants us to carry her all the time! We are thankful that not both of them want carrying at the same time, else we would really be building up our biceps well!)

-          Loves brushing teeth and washing hands & feet (including using waterless cleanser)

-          Cannot sit still on car seat or high chair during meals

-          Prefer pushing and examining his tricycle or small car rather than riding on them as if he's a mechanic…oh boys being boys huh? I don't recall KY doing that at his age :P

-          Loves his sister but dislike being hugged tightly or kissed by her

-          Mimic his sister act at all times, perfectly well at single attempt

Here's two of them on the piano, I think his hands movement really looks like a pro pianist..time to save up to get one for them!

Cheers!

Congratulatory Note to Sister

Today is the BIG day of my baby sister, Eu.

Time flies fast, frankly speaking, even though my sister is a capable and mature lady now, I still cannot imagine her being married and later on being a mother..haha…guess I would say the same thing when it is my own daughter's turn to walk to the aisle!

So, Eu and Chong, may both of you start a new journey together with much tender loving care, patience and understanding for each other!

Assist the Disabled in the Right Way

Hi folks,

I though of sharing my experience about assisting a disabled people…the reason being after hearing one mobility-impaired gentleman remarked his fear of being pulled and eventually fell down when being assisted by another able-bodied person.

During my Honors Degree project, I choose to research on computer interface design which suits different types of disabled user. Thus throughout the research study, I had the chance to meet up and interview and became friends with some of these wonderful and strong-hearted people!

Honestly at that point of time, I realized how "disabled" I am, spiritually as compared to them. Despite their disability, they are striving hard and living life to their fullest! Each moment is spent overcoming each hurdle they faced in their daily lives. Never give up attitude which is greatly lacking in able-bodied person I am. One fine example is when one visually-impaired("blind" person told me that it is common and like everyday "incident" that they might trip over a pothole or uneven ground.

Enough said, I like to just highlight some short points/guideline in assisting the disabled group. I hope this may help everyone to assist in the proper or better way!

1.       When assisting visually-impaired person to walk/cross the road, offer your shoulder to them and walk in front of them. Do not pull their hand. They might lose their balance and fall. Same applies for mobility-impaired or even old folks.
2.  Treat them equally. Even though you could possibly give some assistance but they also be most grateful if we give them equal treatment and respect.
3.  For web developers/web content designer, it's wise to supply alt text on images being put up as most of the voice synthesizer used by the visually-impaired cannot read graphic.
4. Architext or building/public transport designer, proper and safe ramp and spacious sitting area, ample big space parking bay are some little kind act that you can include in your design.
5. Computer hardware equipment , though they are grateful for special device for them(the special disabled group), what I found out from my research study is they still prefered to adapt to the "normal" or "common" hardware used by common folks like us, mainly 'cos the cost of getting a specially-designed device is far beyond their means. Personally, I felt if the hardware designed for all has cater for these group of people, not only will they have a bigger chunk of market, they might even conquer the up-and-coming older folks or "golden age" generation who are fast adapting to IT ;) Talking about commercial value here!

So here's my pinch of thoughts. Have you all have something to add or feedback?

Love to hear from you!

Cheers!
